My astrological sign is Cancer, and we tend to be homebodies, so it’s probably no surprise my favorite places to travel are places that feel like home. (Or at least places I wish could be home!) I have a friend who loves traveling the world. That holds no allure for me. All I can think about are the language difficulties, the hassle of currency exchange, and the fear of strange foods that will likely leave me holed up in the hotel room. No, give me a comfortable place where I’d like to stay forever.

I have two favorite forever places: Maine and Hawaii. Whenever I visit, I find myself grabbing a real estate sales magazine and dreaming of a lottery win. I actually lived in Bangor, Maine for a year and a half and got to see a lot of this fabulous state, with it’s dramatic, rocky beaches, cool pine forests, and colorful locals. Now I make a trip to Southern Maine every summer with my husband and children. He has family in New England, and they have a monster family reunion there each year. Then, we explore the beaches of southern Maine and make plans for new journeys every year. Bar Harbor and Moosehead Lake are on the schedule for next year.

Sadly, we don’t get to Hawaii as often. I’ve only been there twice. But it’s the kind of place you dream about visiting again, with the beautiful scenery, the gorgeous weather, and koi ponds wherever you go! We love the orchid flowers that seem to be nestled beside every pillow, drink, or appetizer you order. I can’t get enough of the Polynesian dancers and music. My daughter has been begging to take ukele lessons, here in upstate NY. And the flowers and tropical foliage will make you swoon. It’s definitely the kind of place you can imagine staying forever.

During our travels, we’ve met a few who did just that. The guide for our horseback ride on the beach told us she came to Hawaii for a visit, and had all her belonging shipping to the islands. She never left!

Some people like a new adventure every time they travel, and we do check out new places on our vacations. But we return to our favorites again and again, like a cherished book or beloved movie.

Flirts! Collection

Flirts! 5 Romantic Short Stories to squeeze into your busy life. Fun, flirty, sweet and sassy;always with the perfect happy ending. Each story is 8,000 to 11,000 words in length (approximately 32-44 typical book pages in length. 53,000 words total, or 210 typical book pages.)

And now a short excerpt from the book...

Excerpt from "Spooked by Love" story #1 from Holiday Flirts!

“So, I’m invited to a grownup Halloween party next weekend. Would you like to come? We’ve already got fabulous costumes.” He waggled his eyebrows.

I blew out a long breath. My heart was shouting ‘yes,’ but my brain stamped its foot ‘no’—kind of like Chelsea often did. “I don’t think so.”

Jeff snapped his fingers. “Wait, just a minute. I know what the problem is. I’ll be right back.” He dashed over to the big cauldron of candy and goodies set up on a banquet table, dug through the treats inside, and hurried back. He sat down and stared at me, all serious. Then he smiled, showing off neon-green vampire teeth. “Do you ‘vant to go out ‘vith me now?” he said, with a deep, sultry, Dracula accent.

I laughed so hard I thought I might hiccup. “Because you’re wearing fake teeth?”

Frowning, he lost the accent. “I heard women are really into vampires these days.” He shrugged. “Did my sister lie to me about that?”

My lips twitched into a smile. This guy could’ve been a new hot member of the Cullen family from Twilight, but I still wouldn’t go out with him. “I’m sorry, not even the sexiest, pointiest, vampire teeth could tempt me.”

He leaned across the table towards me, lowering his voice. “I’m a police officer. Are women into police officers these days? I’ve got the uniform and everything.”

I giggled—and I am so not a giggler. “I’m sure plenty of women have a thing for police officers.”

Lisa Scott is a former TV news anchor who now enjoys making up stories instead of sticking to the facts. The first book in her Willowdale Romance series will be released by Belle Bridge books in November 2012. In the meantime, she'll be releasing short stories linked to the Willowdale series, in addition to her Flirts! collections.

When not begging her husband and two kids for a few minutes of peace to write her stories, she works as a voice actor and putters around in her koi pond and garden in upstate NY.

Blurb: Every volume of the Flirts! Collection features five sweet, funny romantic short stories, linked by a loose thread. It all ties up in a fab, fun ending, bringing together characters from all the stories in that collection. Each short story is 8,000-12,000 words long--the perfect length to squeeze in during your lunch break or kids' practices. Sometimes you need a little love!

Thank you for hosting Lisa today.

My sister was a cancer, and she always felt that she was at home when she was with me. I left New England so we could spend her last days together. I am now back in New Hampshire, but I don't regret the time I spent with her.

Hi Lisa,

Hope you enjoyed a great Valentine's Day!

I enjoy the idea of traveling and there's lots of places I would love to visit, but probably never will. So, I'm content to travel between MI and NC twice a year to visit my kids and family still left in MI. Wonder if I should try a more Northeasterly route...say the New England states and Canada into MI? That would work...of course, it might take about 2 weeks to get home! LOL but how bad could that be?

Can't leave without a question so here's an easy one for you today. Do you listen to music while you write and if so, do you have a song list set for each book you write?

Hi Lisa! Did you make your koi pond in NY AFTER visiting Hawaii and being imspired or did you have one before you went there and saw how ubiquitous they were? Just curious.

Hi ladies, sorry I'm late to the party. I've been writing!

Momjane, you must have been close to your sister. You were so lucky to have that time with her. I don't have a sister and wish I did! We love new hampshire too. :)

Karen, I don't listen to music. I know some people do, but it distracts me. And definitely try the new england states. You'll love it!

Catherine, yes the koi ponds in Hawaii absolutely inspired my koi pond at home. I spent a year researching how to build it and planning the design. I love it so much.

Hey, if you want to try one of the flirts collections, Fairy Tale Flirts! is free on Amazon today!
