Ruthless

I’ve read and reviewed the first three books on this series. And now you guys can see an interview with Cheryl Douglas!

Why did you decide to write a novel?

I pursued another career path, as a nutritionist, but I’ve always been passionate about writing. I thought it was finally time to do something about it when the lease on my commercial space expired and I found myself at the proverbial fork in the road, in terms of my career. I had to choose between taking the path of least resistance, since I already had a successful business, or taking a chance and following my bliss. I’m so glad I chose the latter.

What do you think makes your book stand out in today’s market?

This book, Ruthless, is a part of series, which follows the journey of a close-knit group of friends and family. I think people who have read and enjoyed the first book in the series, Shameless, are invested in learning what happens to the secondary characters as the series progresses. It’s all about making an emotional connection with readers in the first book of a series and hoping that they like the story and your writing style enough to come back for more.

Do you have any must-haves while you are writing?

My writing partner is a black Havanese dog named Tia. She’s always with me when I’m writing and even provides a little comic relief by climbing up in my lap and tapping on the keyboard when she has something to contribute.

What kind of books do you read in your spare time? Do you read the same genre that you write?

I usually read in the same genre I write. I think it’s important to study my craft, and learn what’s worked for other authors and what doesn’t work. I’m currently reading 50 Shades of Gray because I had to find out what the hype was about. I’m only 30 pages in. I’m not hooked yet, but I may feel differently by the end of the book. When I’m not reading romance, I’m reading books about positive thinking, the Law of Attraction, Chicken Soup, and Louise Hay. I’m never without a book. In fact, I went on vacation recently and forgot my ebook reader on the plane. Of course, I didn’t realize it was missing until I got to the resort. Let’s just say, when I returned home, I went to the electronics store even before I unpacked my bags.

Can you tell us anything about what you are currently working on?

I also write under a different pen name, in another sub-genre of romance. I’ve published a novella trilogy under that pen name, and I’ve just completed the first book in another six book series.

What is one novel book that you would recommend?

I’ve read a thousand books over the years and there are so many authors I admire. I don’t think one book stands out among all others, but I finished Stealing Home by Sheryl Woods recently and enjoyed it enough to buy the other books in the series, so I would recommend that one.

A curiosity you would like to share.

I love to travel and I’m always curious to learn about different countries and cultures.

Quick answers:

Going on a three month cruise around the world.

a nightmare?

Being trapped on a sinking cruise ship.

Favorite quote?

clip_image002[9]About the Author

It took me thirty-seven years to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I thought I'd found my calling. In fact, I worked as a nutritionist for twelve years before I finally admitted to myself that while I enjoyed my work, I couldn't imagine doing it for the next thirty years.

My sub-conscious knew that I wanted to be a writer long before the conscious part of my mind decided to get with the program. While my sub-conscious was hard at work creating character profiles, plots and storylines, my conscious mind was telling me it was crazy to give up a successful business on the off-chance one of my manuscripts might rise to the top of someone's never-ending slush pile. After years of listening to that negative voice, I was finally ready to stop making excuses, face the fear and follow my dream of becoming a full-time writer, no matter the outcome. I'm so thankful I did.

I love bringing my characters to life and I am so grateful to have readers who love those characters as much as I do.

When I take a break from writing it's to spend time with my husband (a.k.a. my real life hero), my son, and my writing partner, Tia, a spirited Havanese who enjoys tapping her paw on my keyboard whenever I need a little comic relief.
